  • Reminder - Term 3 statewide staff meeting (all welcome!)

    The Languages and Culture team’s Term 3 statewide staff meeting is coming up soon, on Wednesday  14 August, 4-5 pm.  The topic of the meeting is Listening activities for Stages 4 and 5.   Have your students ever experienced ‘listening anxiety’? Are you looking for new strategies to teach this challenging skill?   This session will include ideas for pre-listening, during-listening and post-listening tasks to engage all learners and reduce 'listening anxiety'. All activities are linked to the outcomes and content points of the Modern Languages K-10 Syllabus.   To enrol, please go to MyPL  and search for course code NR29242 , then select the session Languages statewide staff meeting, Term 3 2024 .    Remember, if you have attended a SWS meeting before, it will say 'Completed'. Ignore that and click on the course, then select the upcoming meeting by clicking the circle next to its name.   • Free film-making workshop

    The Greek Orthodox Community of NSW (GOC) is organising a free workshop for ALL drama and community language teachers and students , as part of the Community Language Schools Specific Grant.   The workshop will be held on Saturday 17 August 2024 at the Novotel Sydney Brighton. The workshop will be split into 2 sessions. The teacher session is in the morning (8:30am-12:30pm) and the student session is in the afternoon (1-4pm). Teachers are encouraged to join their students in the student session.   Whether you’re an aspiring filmmaker or simply looking to help students on their journey to making a film of their own, the workshop aims to support teachers and guide students to create short films, and provide students with practical filmmaking experiences. You'll gain insights into writing, storyboarding, filming, and editing with guidance from industry professionals.   Attached please find a poster and invitation letter.   Spots are limited, so please register as soon as possible. To secure your spot, please email education@goc.com.au  by 14 August.

  • Explicit teaching in languages

    Explicit teaching and effective language teaching go hand in hand. Explicit teaching aligns with how students process, store and retrieve information. Every student should experience explicit teaching when it is new or complex. This allows students to gain foundational skills and knowledge that they then can apply with greater independence. As part of the department's deepened focus on explicit teaching, the Languages and Culture team has developed this infographic to show what explicit teaching looks like in their support for modern languages K-10, as well as what happens in languages classrooms. What can you see in here that is already evident in teaching practices?

  • Wonderful Indonesia Education Explorer Award

    The Indonesian Government is offering the Wonderful Indonesia Education Explorer Award for Indonesian teachers to visit Indonesia and immerse themselves in the language and culture. Details are included on the flyer. Applications are due 9 August 2024 .

  • Are you a preservice language teacher?

    Registrations are now open for the NSW Department of Education's Preservice language teachers' workshop . Date : Friday 4 October 2024, 8:30am - 3:30pm Venue : Department of Education, Level 1,105 Phillip St, Parramatta Sessions : Engagement strategies for the languages classroom A backward-mapping approach to programming Learning routines to support classroom management Advocacy strategies to build the profile of languages Q&A panel to answer questions and discuss scenarios for beginning teachers (we would love preservice teachers to submit questions for this session, which can be done via the registration form) Register with this form  by Friday 27 September. There is no cost to attend. What a great opportunity to meet your future language-teaching colleagues and connect with the department!

  • Units available to consider using in Terms 3 and/or 4

    With the aim of helping you with your planning for Semester 2, the department has developed an overview of all of the sample units they have developed for the Modern Languages K-10 Syllabus which are available on their languages website .  The attached overview allows you to see what is available across languages so that you can see what is of interest to you, find the unit(s) on the website and adapt them to the language you are teaching to suit you and your students.  This overview shows the language, stage, term, assessment task and skills that are suggested for each unit, and includes direct website links for each unit. Refer to the attached snapshots, for an even quicker look, before you explore the attached document.

  • Indonesian support - launch recording

    The Indonesian set of resources to support the Modern Languages K-10 Syllabus was presented at the Indonesian teachers' workshop in June. For those who could not attend, or who would like to recap the information covered, you can access a recording  on our YouTube channel, presented by Indonesian teachers and Languages Advisors, Lauren Dwyer and Jess Holliday. The resources can be found on the department's Languages website  and include: Stages 4 and 5 sample scope and sequences Stage 4 sample unit of work - What do you want to buy? ( Mau beli apa? ) student-friendly infographics for each scope and sequence and the unit of work 47 ready-to-go activities with resources and answer sheets.

  • New support for Indonesian!

    The NSW Department of Education has just published their Indonesian support resources for the Modern Languages K-10 Syllabus at Languages resources 7-10 - Indonesian. The resource set includes: scope and sequences for Stage 4 (100 hours mandatory) and Stage 5 (200 hours elective) a fully-resourced Stage 4 unit of work - What do you want to buy?, including 47 downloadable activities and games and examples of brain breaks to reduce cognitive load, differentiated strategies and scaffolds to support all students student-facing infographics for the sample unit of work and sample scope and sequences, which are editable on Canva. We encourage all teachers, not just Indonesian teachers, to look at these resources as they can be adapted for use with different languages. Selamat bereksplorasi!

  • Games Boy JP

    Sean Murphy (M.C., educator and one-time Tokyo resident (website link) has gotten together with Japanese stand-up Takashi Wakasugi to create an all-new Games Boy JP, a curriculum-aligned comedy show + workshop for secondary schools. It’s about delving into language and culture far beyond the cliches of sushi and samurai, offering students a taste of teenage life in the Land of the Rising Sun.     The NSW Department of Education has updated its Stage 6 Continuers text types support documents. By using these guides, you can support your students to develop and refine their writing skills across a range of tasks. The guides contain advice on sample purpose, structure and language features.
