The NSW Department of Education has re-released their 'Quirky comics' resources. The comics are available in Chinese, French, German, Greek, Indonesian, Italian and Japanese, and provide entertaining video texts to support language learning.

On Thursday 18 May, 4-5 pm, the Languages and Culture team will present their Term 2 statewide staff meeting, focusing on the new Modern Languages K-10 Syllabus and the support they are developing to assist teachers 7-10 with programming. The Sydney North Network is holding a full-day meeting in Term 2, on Tuesday 16 May. The focus of the meeting will be on collaboration for the new K-10 Modern Language Syllabus. Please enrol on MyPL. One of the aspects of the new Modern Languages K-10 Syllabus which we really like is that the outcomes and content for Stage 5 allow for clearer progression into Stage 6 Continuers. To showcase this for you, the Languages and Culture team has created 3 infographics - one for each of the focus areas (interacting, understanding texts and creating texts) and highlighted the connections with Stage 6 Continuers outcomes. In the new Modern Languages K-10 Syllabus, students develop intercultural capability across all 3 focus areas – interacting, understanding texts and creating texts. Intercultural capability is the capacity to exchange, understand and create meaning between people and across languages and cultures. This infographic explores the ways you can include intercultural capability in your classrooms through discussion, examples, resources, texts, topics and content. It is important to remember culture is not taught separately to language. Language and culture are intertwined - students learn not only the grammar and vocabulary but also how to communicate in the cultural context of the language.

NESA has released 3 Accredited PD courses for their new K-10 languages syllabuses (Modern Languages, Classical Languages and Aboriginal Languages). These are self-paced learning modules which allow teachers to engage and interact with each syllabus, and check their understanding by completing a range of activities. Each course will contribute 2.5 hours of NESA Accredited PD in the priority area of Delivery and Assessment of NSW Curriculum. To access the courses, visit https://lms.nesa.nsw.edu.au/

Welcome to our new-look blog, now hosted on Wix. 👋 We had to move over here, as our previous platform was having a few hiccups. The domain name is the same, but you'll notice a few changes - we no longer have language-specific pages, and subscribers can now leave comments. Since 2013, Languages NSW has been supporting language teachers in NSW with news about events, resources and professional learning, and that won't change. If the first few posts look familiar, that's because we're reposting anything relating to the new syllabuses. After that, it'll all be new and fresh! 😊 We look forward to providing you support.

At the end of 2022, NESA published the new Modern Languages K-10 Syllabus, to be used to teach from 2024. Some of you may feel a little overwhelmed at a new syllabus, especially when the current language-specific K-10 syllabuses in NSW are still relatively new. We've had a look at the new syllabus and wanted to let you know that we genuinely love it! So much so, we created an infographic which summarises all the the things we love about it. You may want to print it off and put it on your staffroom wall, so you can start sharing a little of that excitement too. You could even use it as a stimulus to share what you're excited about, at a faculty or network meeting. Both NESA and the DoE are publishing support for the syllabus, so watch this space! the new syllabus is a simpler, more supportive document our teams will provide comprehensive support throughout 2023, to support you with your planning, ready to start implementation in 2024. The primary and secondary languages teams at the department have had a look through the syllabus and our initial reaction is ... genuine excitement! There is a lot to like about this new syllabus, and we thought we’d share with you some of the aspects we feel most excited about.​ Please read the infographic attached, and maybe even print it off for your staffroom wall, so that when you come back after the January holidays, you can start sharing a little of that excitement too.
